Gone are the days where if families wanted to save money they would move to the suburbs. That shit is old history! Due to the reduction in crime, increase in public transportation, and increase in value of farm land, inner cities are now the place to be.
If you're not a completely slack ass lazy shit, then you can dramatically reduce your living and transportation expenses by living in more densely populated areas. For instance, it costs 8% less for housing and transportation costs to live in Seattle than it does to live in Tampa. Living in a high rise may be more expensive per square foot, but it's also cheaper on utilities. And since everything is closer together you can easily walk or ride your bike to the market versus getting a big ass SUV and toting an entire suburban load of plastic bags home from the grocery store. You have to do this of course because it takes you 15-30 mins each way just to get to a grocery store!
In regards to this I highly recommend that you read a book called NO IMPACT MAN which is about a family of 3 living in NYC and their struggle to have no impact on the environment. If you ask me the guy is a serious pansy who constantly complains about White People Problems. However, he has some excellent advice on how to reduce your carbon footprint and also how to save some green ($).
