BHAG UPDATE - July '15

FUCKING.  KILLED.  IT!  I managed to save 76% of my take home income.  Now there were a number of things that worked in my favor.  One being that I got a bonus and also I brought down my expense by about $450 a month.  That cost cutting will be sustained going forward, but the increase in income will not be.  So I'll take it while I can get it!  Here's the breakdown...

Income
Real Estate: 24.01%
Investments: 3.61%
Salary: 72.68%

Expenses
Utilities: 4.84%
Transportation: 1.73%
Charity: 1.23%
Insurance: 3.52%
Home: 14.9%
Mortgage: 26.38%
Gas: 6.07%
Gift: 1.88%
Eating out: 5.83%
Internet: 1.63%
Phone: 1.91%
Food: 4.06%
Medical: 4.96%
Travel: 21.07%

As you can see the salary part of my income is disproportionately large, only due to the unexpected bonus.  As for the expenses the travel was abnormally large because of the vacation I took to visit family.

Going forward I'm expecting some large expenses relating to a wedding and honeymoon.  There will also be some large changes in the living arrangements so I'll have to see how I account for all of this and whether it allows for more saved money or less.  Only time will tell...

BHAG UPDATE - JUNE '15

1/7/2015

Picture
June was unspectacular with only 59% of after tax income saved.   A huge reason was due to the fact that I had large travel expenses from a trip.

Income
Salary: 61.35%
Real Estate: 38.64%

Expenses
Utilities: 4.62%
Transportation: 1.77%
Charity: 4.71%
Travel: 22.75%
Medical: 4.59%
Insurance: 3.61%
Home: 15.32%
Mortgage: 21.69%
Gift: 1.54%
Gas: 4.6%
Personal: 0.81%
Eating out: 3%
Internet: 1.68%
Phone: 1.96%
Food: 5.69%
Entertainment: 1.29%
Dog: 0.37%

Going forward I should see a nice rise after July.  I'm taking a trip in July that should be expensive, but I also no longer have orthodontist cost.  This should bring up to by BHAG goal of saving 70% of after tax income.  Other than that everything is humming along.

BHAG UPDATE - MAY '15

May was spectacularly bad as April was spectacularly good.  I managed to only save 54% of my after tax income.  The good news is that the orthodontist payments end next month, so from now on I should see a nice bump in my savings every month.  Here's how it all broke down...

Expenses
Food: 3.92%
Dog: 6.94%
Transportation: 3.79%
Phone: 1.72%
Education: 0.2%
Charity: 1.1%
Insurance: 3.16%
Clothes: 0.99%
Home: 13.41%
Mortgage: 18.98%
Gift: 1.3%
Gas: 3.05%
Personal:0.07%
Eating out: 4.39%
TV/Internet: 1.47%
Medical: 15.73%
Utilities: 4.08%
Entertainment: 2.26%
Travel: 13.43%

Income
Real Estate: 40.04%
Salary: 59.96%

So the big abnormality this month was the travel expense.  I went to Chicago for a long weekend and it's an expensive city.  I'll be going on another trip in the coming months so we'll see another splurge then.  Like I mentioned above though the big medical expense each month will be going away so hopefully I can get back to normal with my BHAG of saving 70% after taxes.
