Two smokers complained to me about their utility bills...

So it's summer time in Florida and that means one thing.  It's hot as hell!  And subsequently unlike most other parts of the country, our utility bills are the highest in the summer, not the winter.  I've spent two summers in the god forsaken state with no AC and it sucks!  Of course my parents didn't care because the immediate response was, "We didn't have AC when we were kids.  Quit complaining!".  What can I say you picked the wrong time to be born.  But I digress...
Two people bitched about their utility bills to me in the past week.  I can sympathize with them, but not when they reek of smoke.  Don't get me wrong I'm as stingy with the thermostat as the next guy, but I don't have a cigarette hanging out of my mouth when I do it.  What's the big deal?  $150 a month is the big deal!

I've had utility bills (water, sewer, electricity) that has ranged from $350 a month to $80 a month depending upon the house and time of year.  My last place was brand new, super efficient, and even in the middle of summer the AC only costed me $1 a day with 4 people living there.  I'll absolutely pay $1 a day for that!  Other places have been closer to $2-$3 a day for AC.  So how does this compare with smoking?

Well if you're spending at least $5 a day on smokes and spending $1-3 a day on AC, in my opinion you have nothing to complain about.  Get the fag out of your mouth and get your priorities in order.  If you're spending $150 a month to $1,800 a year on cigarettes then that's a lot of utilities that you're smoking.  Water, electricity, and sewer are basic necessities in my book.  Smoking is not!

So if you find yourself complaining about the cost of your lights, as you're lighting up.  You need to be aware that you're spending anywhere from 40% to 100% of your utility money on something that slowly kills you.  Maybe it's time for a lifestyle change...

This website was created due to the atrociously misguided financial advice that I've heard over the decades.  Financial freedom is not intellectually strenuous, but it takes discipline.
