For a single man in my age group I ended up right in the middle, but it also includes the cost for food for eating out. If I didn't eat out I believe I could easily be in the thrifty category, if not lower. I almost never eat out or get fast food, so it's more of a social activity for me. I would have to become a hermit to eliminate the eating out category. With that said, if you eat out with just the spouse and kids, then this can totally be avoided and if you're looking to save money, you should avoid this LIKE THE PLAGUE!
