The GOLD STANDARD

There's a reason the USA and many other industrialized countries went off the gold standard 40 years ago.  It works fine when things are humming along, but it really sucks when the shit hits the fan!  Case in point, the Great Depression.

During the Great Depression countries had to increase their interest rates in order to attract more gold to their country, thus increasing currency, liquidity, and hopefully inflation.  This would be similar to the Fed pumping money into the economy, except they have to do it by buying short term paper and this lowers interest rates, since price and rates move in opposite directions.

Well if you know anything about interest rates, the last thing that you'd like to do during a final crisis or recession the last thing that you would want to do is raise interest rates.  Rising interest rates drag down prices of all asset classes rather than creating inflationary pressures like you'd want during this time.

A commodity based currency system was suggested by Ben Graham, the legendary investor, many decades ago in which he outlined how many different types of commodities would be used.  For instance currency would fluctuate based upon the prices of wheat, oil, gold, nickel, pork bellies, etc all combined into a basket of goods.  I like this plan, but it has pros and cons.  The con being that you can't go and trade in your currency for those commodities like a person could when they redeemed cash for actual gold.  That in and of itself makes it more like a fiat currency, which we currently have.  The pro to this is that it takes out the ability of the govt to print money and therefore, depreciate the currency.  Thus reducing or eliminating inflation.

Make no mistake about it, you will still have volatile swings in prices, so price stability or a steady increase, like we currently have, will go away.  Just know that there is no perfect/no-brainer, system or else we'd be using it.

How the rich get rich in one word - LEVERAGE!

"The rich don't work for money, they make their money work for them."
-Jgrayboat

When most people think of leverage they think of debt.  While that might be a part of the equation for getting rich, it's not the best or only way.  When I'm talking about leverage I'm talking about being able to do more with less.  Whether you're punching a time clock as a lawyer, doctor, or assembly line worker, you're constrained by time.  There are only so many hours in a day.  So how do you get around that?

Do yourself a favor and look at the richest people in the world at Forbes. http://www.forbes.com/billionaires/list/#tab:overall

Do you see any doctors, lawyer, engineers on there?  Do you find that strange?  They're the highest paid professions, why aren't they on there?  LEVERAGE!  Even if you charge the most of them all at $1,000 per hour of your time.  You're only going to make around $2 million a year before taxes.  That's nice, but Warren Buffett made $37 million A DAY all of last year!  He didn't do it by working overtime.  He did it with leverage.  Would you rather have 2,000 hours to work or have $55 billion dollars working for you?

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

In college one of the first things you learn in Econ 101 is that there's no such thing as a free lunch. What does that mean?

I got a call from a company telling me that I won a "free" trip to the Bahamas. Great, right?! Wrong!  These things never turn out to be free.  They rope you in with this free offer and then they hit you up with a bunch of fees later, so that you end up with paying the same amount.

I hate cruises and I know this because I've never been on one.  I don't think that stopping off at a port for 2 hours is justification for having "been to" a country.

If you get a call about a free cruise.  Just hang up and don't let them waste your time.  It's a classic ripoff!

What does any of this have to do with Kate Upton?  Nothing, nothing at all...
