The idea of this came to me when I was helping a very bright friend move money from an old (401)k to a new rollover IRA. I was telling them how to do it and I kept hearing the same thing over and over again, "I don't know what you're talking about. None of it." These are highly successful people with advanced degrees, sometimes even in the financial field, yet they don't even know how to make a trade.
I've been doing this for family and friends for years, but more people need to be helped. Most money managers invest your money for at least 1% a year. In return you generally get inferior results compared to the market as a whole and exorbitant fees. As a result a new trend is emerging called "robo-advising" which pretty much invests your money via a software algorithm. In my opinion this is actually better, but if you're a little freaked out about The Terminator investing your retirement funds, then here is your solution.
Robo-advisors generally charge very low fees of 0.1% which I will admit is incredibly low. So for the same low fee of 0.1% of fees I will do the same, except you'll have a human to talk to. What's the cost difference between 1% and 0.1%? Well for an amount of say $100,000 you're talking about $100 vs $1,000 a year. That adds up to a lot of money over your lifetime. Never neglect to figure in fees!
How am I able to do this so cheaply? Pretty simple. Do to the emergence of ETFs you can now invest in large parts of the economy, regions, or the entire world simply by diversifying with a few of these funds. They're very cheap to run and you get as close as you can to matching the performance of the overall market.
Safety? How do I know you won't take the money? The money won't be invested with me nor in my name. All I'll be able to do is access the account in order to place the trades and make adjustments depending upon how the investments perform. You'll be able to see all of the trades, the fees, transactions, everything.
