In the USA probably the only thing that comes after weight loss for New Year's resolutions is getting rid of debt.  It's become a national obsession.  However, just like weight loss they are making up very little ground in conquering this beast. 

I personally never do New Year's resolutions, instead I just start right now for whatever it is that I want to change.  If you're in the same camp here are some great pointers from market watch for conquering debt.

Never say never, right?  Well in this case you can.  Never co-sign on your kid's student loans.  You are essentially taking out the loans yourself and hoping that your kid pays for them.  Finger's crossed!

If for some reason you have already done this.  Make sure you take out a cheap term life insurance policy on your child. The only thing worse than your child not paying them is not being able to pay the student loan because he or she died!  Make sure to get enough life insurance to pay off ALL of the student loan.
